Why STLF Matters: Community

Why STLF Matters Series #2

Think about the six people in your life who you call when you are sick, down, or looking for comfort—they are the cornerstone of your community. Community is becoming a buzzword, but we can define community as the people we call first and feel closest to.

Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel Pay It Forward was the inspiration and namesake behind STLF’s leadership Tour. In the story, a young boy named Trevor comes up with a simple plan for his class’ assignment to change the world for the better.

Trevor devises that if one person does three ‘good deeds’ or random acts of kindness to separate individuals, asking each recipient that they only do the same—three becomes nine becomes 27 and after 1000 levels will influence 1 billion people! Trevor believes that building this community of kindness is easy. Reflecting on the simplicity of his idea, Trevor says, “Here’s the part nobody seems to get. It doesn’t even have to be that big. I mean… it might just seem big. Depending on who you do it for.”

At STLF, we facilitate the making of strong, affirming relationships through activities designed to meet the gap. Students don’t feel supported as change-agents, often are not presented with common cause, and are surrounded by a culture of apathy. STLF combats this by mixing cliques, providing common experiences and a safe community. STLF connects people through the action of service.
